What to Do If Your Office Is Closed
Social Security offices close on all federal holidays, and occasionally for local emergencies like severe weather.
Your options
- Do it online: card replacement, benefit letters, address changes and more are at ssa.gov any time.
- Call instead: 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–7 p.m. local time.
- Try a nearby office: every office page on this site lists the closest other offices with their hours and phone numbers.
Federal holidays when offices close
New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. If a holiday falls on a weekend, the office may close the Friday before or Monday after.
Payments aren't affected
Benefit payments still arrive on schedule — if your payment date falls on a holiday or weekend, it's usually paid the business day before.
